Celebrating Green Fins Day 2026: Our Algae Clean-Up for Coral Restoration in Cozumel

The Sand Dollar Sports community celebrated Green Fins Day with an underwater algae clean-up to care for our coral restoration platforms in Cozumel.

One Action for Our Waters: Uniting for the Mesoamerican Reef

The Mesoamerican Reef is a fragile, deeply interconnected ecosystem, and it needs our constant care. This year, we celebrated Green Fins Day by turning our passion for the ocean into hands-on conservation.

On the morning of October 17th at 9:00 am, 12 of our dive instructors and 3 community volunteers gathered at Sand Dollar Sports in Cozumel, Mexico, to answer a global call to action. The theme was โ€œOne Action for Our Waters,โ€ a reminder that every local effort adds to the health of our oceans.

As a dive center, we believe environmental leadership goes beyond observing the reef. It means actively helping it heal. So we joined the celebration and created an event that let our staff and diving community take part directly in the recovery of our local waters.

Why an Algae Clean-Up Matters

When people talk about coral restoration, the focus usually falls on planting new corals. But maintaining the nurseries is just as important for their long-term survival, so our mission this year was an algae cleanup. To help celebrate Green Fins Day, we invited our divers to carefully clean our reef restoration platforms.

On a healthy reef, herbivorous fish and sea urchins graze on macroalgae and keep it in check. On artificial restoration platforms, fast-growing algae can outcompete slow-growing coral fragments for sunlight and space. Left unchecked, algae can smother vulnerable corals and cause death.ย

Using small brushes, our divers scrubbed the structures by hand, taking care not to damage delicate coral tissue. This gives new fragments a much better chance to grow and thrive. Itโ€™s an ongoing task, and it directly supports our restoration success rates. Each fragment has the potential to become a healthy colony that can one day be outplanted onto degraded sections of the Cozumel reef.

In just one hour, three teams of divers cleaned seven reef restoration platforms. Itโ€™s careful, painstaking work, and it only gets done when everyone pitches in.

Building a Community Beyond the Dive

Divers today donโ€™t just want to be tourists. They want to help protect the ocean. An event like Green Fins Day extends the environmental briefings we give every day, and when divers get their hands dirty scrubbing algae off a platform, they form a personal connection to the reefโ€™s survival.

The clean-up also reinforced the PADI AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty that our staff completed last month, along with the values we uphold year-round as a sustainable dive operator. Protecting the ocean is a shared responsibility. Whether you practice good buoyancy, wear a rash guard to safeguard the corals from sunscreen, or join a dive against debris, your choices matter.

Weโ€™re proud of the volunteers and instructors who gave their morning for Green Fins Day to a healthier future for Cozumelโ€™s marine life.
