A New Chapter in Our Sustainability Journey: Sand Dollar Sports Achieves EarthCheck Bronze Benchmark

EarthCheck

At Sand Dollar Sports, sustainability isn’t a new initiativeโ€”itโ€™s part of who we are at our very core.

Long before environmental certifications became common in the diving industry, our founder, John Flynn, believed that if we wanted to make a living from the ocean, we also had a responsibility to protect it. For more than 40 years, that philosophy has shaped the way Sand Dollar Sports operates, influencing everything from how we care for Cozumel’s reefs to how we educate our guests and support our local community.

John has always believed that diving is about more than exploring the underwater world. It’s about developing a deeper appreciation for it and inspiring others to become stewards of the ocean. That vision continues to guide our team every day.

Celebrating a New Milestone in Sustainability!

Today, we’re proud to celebrate an important milestone in that journey:

Sand Dollar Sports has achieved EarthCheck Bronze Benchmark status. This achievement recognizes our commitment to responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.

EarthCheck Bronze Benchmark status is a globally recognized milestone that confirms Sand Dollar Sports is actively measuring and improving its environmental and social impact. It reinforces our long-standing commitment to sustainability in the diving industry and our mission to protect Cozumelโ€™s extraordinary marine ecosystem for future generations.

This achievement is more than a certificate on the wall. It’s recognition of values that have been part of Sand Dollar Sports since the beginning and a promise that we’ll continue building on John’s vision for many years to come.

Sustainability Is a Journey

When people ask us why sustainability matters so much, the answer is simple. We don’t just work in the oceanโ€”we call it home. We live here, work here, and raise our families here.

Every morning, we head out across the crystal-clear waters of Cozumel to share one of the most spectacular coral reef systems in the world. We watch eagle rays glide effortlessly through the blue, sea turtles rest beneath coral ledges, and colorful reef fish weave through thriving coral gardens. These moments never lose their sense of wonder, and they remind us why protecting this incredible ecosystem is our responsibility.

Long before beginning the EarthCheck assessment, sustainability was already woven into the way we operated. It influences how we care for our equipment, conserve water and energy, reduce waste, educate our guests, and protect the reefs we visit every day.

EarthCheck gave us the opportunity to measure what we were already doing, identify new ways to improve, and hold ourselves accountable to an internationally recognized, science-based standard.

Protecting the ocean isn’t achieved through a single big project. It’s built through thousands of thoughtful decisions made every day. And EarthCheck is one more tool to help us measure our progress and achieve our goals.

What Is EarthCheck?

EarthCheck is one of the world’s leading environmental certification and benchmarking programs for the travel and tourism industry. For more than 35 years, it has helped businesses measure, monitor, and improve their environmental and social performance.

Rather than simply making environmental promises, EarthCheck independently benchmarks organizations against global best practices in areas such as:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Water conservation
  • Waste reduction
  • Carbon emissions
  • Environmental management
  • Community engagement
  • Sustainable business practices

Achieving Bronze Benchmark status means Sand Dollar Sports has successfully met these rigorous standards and is committed to continually improving its sustainability performance year after year.

Why Sustainability Matters in the Diving Industry

The diving industry depends on healthy oceans. Without vibrant coral reefs, abundant marine life, healthy corals, and clean water, the underwater scenery that inspires people to dive wouldn’t exist.

As dive professionals, we’re in a unique position. Every day, we introduce guests to an underwater world that many have only dreamed of seeing. We also have the opportunityโ€”and the responsibilityโ€”to teach divers how their actions can help preserve it.

Whether it’s practicing excellent buoyancy, respecting marine life, avoiding contact with coral, reducing waste, or supporting local conservation efforts, every diver has the power to make a positive impact. Sustainability in the diving industry isn’t about limiting adventure. It’s about ensuring these extraordinary experiences remain possible for future divers, future families, and future generations.

What EarthCheck Means for Our Guests

When you choose to dive with Sand Dollar Sports, you’re choosing more than a dive operator. You’re supporting a company that believes unforgettable experiences and responsible tourism should go hand in hand.

The EarthCheck Bronze Benchmark demonstrates that our commitment to sustainability isn’t simply something we talk aboutโ€”it’s something we measure, evaluate, and continually improve.

For our guests, that means you can enjoy your Cozumel diving vacation knowing you’re supporting a dive center that is committed to sustainability through:

  • Conserving water and energy
  • Reducing waste wherever possible
  • Protecting Cozumel’s marine environment
  • Supporting our local community
  • Continuously improving our environmental performance

Every dive you take with us becomes part of something bigger than a vacation. It becomes an investment in protecting the reef that made you fall in love with Cozumel in the first place.

Building on a Strong Foundation

For John Flynn, protecting Cozumel has never been separate from running a successful dive operationโ€”they’ve always gone hand in hand. From the beginning, he set his goal towards protecting the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

Over the years, that commitment has led Sand Dollar Sports to embrace responsible diving practices, become a PADI Eco Center, join Green Fins as a Digital Member, support local coral reef restoration efforts, and continually look for ways to reduce our environmental impact.

The EarthCheck Bronze Benchmark is an exciting milestone, but it isn’t the beginning of our sustainability journeyโ€”and it certainly won’t be the end. Instead, it provides an internationally recognized framework that helps us measure our progress, identify new opportunities, and keep improving year after year.

John often says that every diver who falls in love with Cozumel becomes another advocate for protecting it. That’s the legacy we’re proud to continue: sharing the beauty of our reefs while doing everything we can to preserve them for future generations.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Journey

This certification belongs to everyone who has helped shape our sustainability journey.

  • To our dedicated staff, who embrace responsible practices every day.
  • To our conservation partners, who work tirelessly to protect Cozumel’s reefs.
  • And to every guest who chooses to travel responsibly, practices respectful diving, and shares our passion for the ocean.

If you believe sustainable diving is crucial to help protect the seas, then who you choose to dive with matters!

Together, we’re proving that sustainability in the diving industry isn’t just about protecting the places we visitโ€”it’s about ensuring those places remain healthy, vibrant, and full of life for generations to come.

Thank you for being part of our story. We look forward to welcoming you to Cozumel and continuing this journey togetherโ€”one dive at a time.
