What is a PADI Discover Scuba Dive?

Discover Scuba Diving is the perfect first step into the underwater world—no experience or certification required. This introductory program is designed for beginners who want to try scuba diving in a safe, supervised environment. With the guidance of a professional instructor, you’ll learn basics of scuba diving, the equipment, and important dive skills. After instruction, you’ll then don your equipment and head towards the water to explore the beauty of our house reef.  


There’s also an option to do a second dive off our boat to experience what a boat dive is all about. One dive can be completed in 2 hours, and the 2 dive option will take 4-1/2 hours. Doing a discover scuba dive is the easiest way to see if scuba diving is for you. Most people are hooked after their first breath underwater!  


Note: This is not a certified course. It is only an introduction to the world of scuba diving.

Highlights of our Discover Scuba Dive course

 

  • Curious about the underwater world?: Discover Scuba Diving offers a taste of the experience. You’ll learn basic skills and take your first breaths underwater under the guidance of a PADI professional.
  • Designed for the non-certified diver. You will be fitted with full scuba gear after receiving 25 minutes of instruction and orientation from a PADI instructor. Then you will enter the water from the shore. There’s also a 2 dive option where you can take your second dive off one of our boats at a nearby reef.
  • Your safety is our priority!: You will spend a few minutes in waist-deep water for you to get used to breathing underwater. When you feel comfortable, you and your instructor will head out to dive. Your instructor will guide you in the exploration of this new and amazing world of fish and coral. Our house reef reaches a maximum depth of 25 feet. If you opt for the additional boat dive, that reef can be 45-50 feet deep. However, the maximum depth for a Discover Scuba Dive is 20 feet (6 meters).

  • Discover Scuba Booklet
  • Aqualung dive equipment
  • Mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuits, tanks and weights
  • PADI Certified Instructor

Qualifications and General Info

  • Minimum age 10
  • Must know how to swim
  • Course takes 2 to 4 hours
  • This is a NON-CERTIFIED course

  • 1 Dive from shore:  $90
  • 2 Dives (shore and boat):  $180

Please note:

Some health restrictions do apply. You must create a PADI account and fill out the online Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire before coming.

  • Sand Dollar Sports reserves the right on any final decision regarding your ability to dive.
  • All sunscreens are prohibited at our location. Wearing a rash guard is strongly recommended. You can purchase one from our boutique for $45. It’s a great souvenir to take home!
  • Price does not include “Cozumel Marine Park” fee if any of your dives are in the marine park. All national park fees were increased to 217.32 pesos (~12 USD) on January 1, 2025. You will be asked to pay in USD in cash at the current exchange rate.

Do I need any prior experience or certification?

No! Discover Scuba Diving is designed specifically for beginners. You don’t need any certification or previous scuba experience.

The minimum age is 10 years old. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Yes. Your dive is led by a certified scuba instructor who stays with you the entire time. Safety is our top priority.

Just your swimsuit, towel, and sense of adventure! All scuba gear and a wetsuit is provided.
