Tucked among the soft corals and sponges on Villa Blanca Reef—just steps from our dive center at Sand Dollar Sports—lives one of the ocean’s most elusive and enchanting creatures: the seahorse. Seahorses in Cozumel are hard to spot, especially if you are diving in swift currents going at high speeds. But if you are able to enjoy a laid back shore dive in calmer currents, your chances of spotting one of these delicate sea creatures increases!
Many underwater photographers come to Cozumel specifically in search of seahorses. These mystical creatures—with their curled tails, bony bodies, and horse-like heads—are a favorite subject to capture on camera. While seahorses continue to captivate divers and marine biologists alike, they are also under threat. Habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing all pose serious risks to their survival. Additionally, millions of seahorses are harvested each year for use in traditional medicine, believed to treat everything from “kidney disease to baldness.” (source)

There are seahorses in Cozumel, and we’re fortunate to still have healthy pockets of seahorse habitat, especially on shallow reefs like Villa Blanca. But their future depends on our ability to protect them.
Why Seahorses Matter
Seahorses aren’t just beautiful—they play a critical role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. Seahorses use certain corals, seagrasses, and sponges for shelter and support, which in turn helps keep these habitats healthy. By clinging to them, they reduce algae buildup and support a balanced reef ecosystem. They also feed on plankton and tiny crustaceans, keeping populations in balance. And another important role they hold is serving as a sign of reef vitality. Seahorses are highly sensitive to pollution and habitat changes, making them powerful indicators of reef health. Tracking their populations offers early warning signs of ecosystem stress, helping researchers respond to threats like climate change, overfishing, and habitat loss. Coral reefs need seahorses!

Seahorses on Villa Blanca Reef
Our house reef at Sand Dollar Sports, located on the shallow portion of Villa Blanca Reef, is a unique and special place. It’s one of the few shallow dive sites in Cozumel where divers can spot Caribbean seahorses (Hippocampus reidi). These longsnout seahorses use the sponges and algae to camouflage themselves and hide from predators. They can range in several colors from black, brown, yellow, and red to orange. The longsnout seahorse is typically found at depths ranging from the surface down to about 55 meters (180 feet), though juveniles are more commonly seen in shallower areas closer to shore. Seahorses prefer to live in areas with some brisk current, but also need sheltered spots where they can escape and retreat from predators or in case the current gets too strong. They also require plenty of hitching posts that their tails can grab ahold of. They hang on to sponges and algae with their strong tails while they wait for little invertebrates, planktons, and larval fishes to eat.
Fun fact: Seahorses don’t have stomachs! Young seahorses consume about 3,000 pieces of food daily. (source)
They blend perfectly into their surroundings, making them both elusive and exciting to encounter. This reef is also home to our coral restoration nursery, making it not only a haven for seahorses but a growing symbol of hope for marine life.

⚠️ Threats to Seahorses in Cozumel and Globally
Globally seahorses are vulnerable to:
- Habitat destruction from boat anchoring, coastal development, and mass tourism projects such as cruise piers
- Pollution from land-based runoff and poor infrastructure and disposal of sewage
- Physical Interactions with divers and underwater photographers can cause stress and unintended damage to these delicate creatures.
- Bycatch in non-selective fishing gear
- Illegal trade for souvenirs or use in traditional medicine.
