Sustainable Diving in Cozumel: How We’re Elevating Dive Briefings with Green Fins

The destruction of the world’s coral reefs is impossible to ignore. Between 2023 and 2025 alone, mass bleaching-level heat stress impacted over 80% of global reef areas across 80+ countries. At Sand Dollar Sports, we believe local action matters now more than ever, and that dive safety and ocean conservation must go hand in hand. As champions of sustainable diving in Cozumel, we regularly train our crew through hands-on workshops—ensuring every trip underwater is engaging, educational, and environmentally responsible.

By integrating Green Fins guidelines directly into our core pre-dive briefings, we are empowering divers and snorkelers to actively protect the Mesoamerican Reef every time they step off the boat. A well-structured pre-dive briefing does more than ensure physical safety—it is our primary line of defense for coral protection.

Active Leadership in Mesoamerican Reef Conservation

The Mesoamerican Reef is one of the world’s most vital marine ecosystems, home to thousands of species and critical to coastal resilience. As a certified dive operator within the Cozumel Reefs National Park (PNAC), our responsibility goes far beyond leading underwater tours—we act as frontline guardians of this fragile environment.

To strengthen our impact, we launched targeted team workshops to enhance our pre-dive briefings. Led by Danirel Álvarez, General Director of Sand Dollar Sports and a Green Fins Community Ambassador, the initiative focused on direct input from our daily crew. By listening to our instructors and divemasters, we identified site-specific environmental challenges and refined how we communicate good reef etiquette.

Tailoring the Briefing: Matching Message to Experience

To ensure maximum impact, our team divided into working groups to combine standard PADI and DAN safety protocols with Green Fins educational guidelines. Because every ocean user has a different background, we tailor our environmental messaging by experience level and activity:

What Makes a Sustainable Dive Briefing?

A successful eco-briefing transforms passive observers into active ocean stewards. Here are the core Green Fins practices we embed in every briefing at Sand Dollar Sports:

  1. Zero Contact Policy: Clear rules on avoiding touching, holding, or stepping on marine life or living coral structures.
  2. Proper Weighting and Trim: Checking buoyancy beforehand so divers don’t kick up sediment or damage delicate fans.
  3. Streamlined Equipment: Securing gauges, octopus, and accessories so nothing drags along the reef floor.
  4. No Wildlife Feeding: Explaining how feeding alters natural fish behavior and disrupts the ecological balance.
  5. Reef-Safe Sunscreen & Defense: Encouraging physical UV protection (rashguards) and only biodegradable sunscreens before participating in water sports.

Developed as a 15-point code of conduct, Green Fins is the global benchmark for sustainable diving and snorkeling. It provides marine tourism managers, staff, and guests with actionable guidelines to minimize their physical impact and protect vulnerable ocean ecosystems. This is our standard for sustainable diving practices in Cozumel.
