Cozumel’s clear, turquoise waters and abundant marine life make it one of the most remarkable diving destinations in the world. Yet, as more divers are drawn to its beauty, the need to protect Cozumel’s delicate ecosystem has never been more critical. At Sand Dollar Sports, sustainable scuba diving isn’t just a practice; it’s a commitment. Our sustainable programs, including a coral lab, coral reef restoration platforms, and Reef Ball installations, to ensure that our reefs flourish for generations to come.

What is Sustainable Scuba Diving?

Sustainable scuba diving is about immersing yourself in the underwater world while minimizing your environmental impact. It involves responsible diving practices, marine conservation efforts, and community support to protect the ocean’s health. At Sand Dollar Sports, we take pride in our role as custodians of Cozumel’s reefs by implementing sustainable practices that promote biodiversity, restore reef structures, and educate divers about marine conservation.

Sand Dollar Sports’ Commitment to Sustainable Scuba Diving

With over 40 years of conservation experience, Sand Dollar Sports has become a leader in sustainable scuba diving in Cozumel. Our Travelife certification and Green Fins digital membership underscore our dedication to sustainable tourism practices. Here’s how we promote sustainable diving:

Coral Reef Restoration: We’ve partnered with the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program to protect and restore local coral reefs. Through this program, we replant corals and educate our divers on the importance of these fragile ecosystems.

Artificial Reefs for Marine Life: Artificial reefs play a vital role in relieving pressure on natural reefs by offering alternative diving sites that attract marine life. Our Reef Balls, made from safe, durable materials, provide habitats for fish and coral growth while filtering pollutants and improving water quality. Each Reef Ball is strategically placed to benefit areas of the reef most in need of restoration.

Involving the Community: We continually invest in both children and adults by teaching them about the importance of protecting the reef, getting them involved in beach and underwater cleanups, and supporting students in high school and university who want to become marine biologists, divers, or sustainability experts.

Tips for Divers to Become More Eco-Friendly

  1. Enhance Your Knowledge with Green Fins: As a digital member of Green Fins and our commitment to sustainable diving, we encourage divers and snorkelers to explore the free Green Fins Diver eCourse online. This course provides easy-to-follow guidance on eco-friendly practices that protect marine ecosystems. By completing this courses, you’ll be well-prepared to dive responsibly, understanding the best ways to minimize your impact while enjoying Cozumel’s beautiful reefs.
  2. Practice Good Buoyancy Control: Maintaining proper buoyancy helps prevent accidental contact with corals or disturbing the marine habitat. Our dive instructors are always ready to provide buoyancy tips and adjustments to ensure a safe and sustainable scuba diving experience. If you don’t feel comfortable with your buoyancy, then consider taking the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification. You can take “Peak Performance Buoyancy” as one of your specialty dives.
  3. Avoid Touching Marine Life: Corals are fragile, and even light touches from humans or scuba gear can harm them. We encourage divers to observe, but never touch the incredible marine life. And please don’t collect shells. There are many sea creatures who use them as a haven or a home.
  4. Choose Eco-Friendly Dive Centers: Selecting a dive center that prioritizes sustainability is essential for protecting marine environments. Eco-certified dive centers, like Sand Dollar Sports, follow best practices in conservation, support marine restoration programs, and promote responsible diving behaviors. By choosing an environmentally conscious dive center, you contribute to ongoing efforts that keep Cozumel’s reefs vibrant and healthy.
  5. Travel with a Reusable Water Bottle: Sustainable scuba centers will not be offering you bottles of water, but instead will have clean water available on dive boats and at the dive center from which you can refill your bottle. This is a great way not to leave any single use plastics behind on your scuba dive vacation!
  6. Choose to Wear a Wide Brim hat and Long Sleeve Rash Guard: Although there are “reef-friendly” sunscreens not all are created alike. Some still contain ingredients that can hurt marine life and especially coral reefs. Protect your body and your face from the harmful rays of the sun with clothing instead of sunscreen. Some marine parks, such as here in Cozumel, do not permit sunscreen of any kind. Better to find out what the rules are before you go.
  7. Pack Sustainably: If you are going on a dive trip where you will also be shopping, pack a reusable shopping bag to use. The less plastic we all use, especially single-use plastic, the better it is for our world and our health.
