In commemoration of World Environment Day, on Sunday June 4, 2023, a total of 12 instructors, guides, and certified divers from Sand Dollar Sports Cozumel carried out an underwater clean up in the surroundings of Puerta Maya Cruise Pier. 
The total weight of the collected waste was 81kg (254 pieces), of which plastic was the most abundant material (cups, water bottles, etc.) 44% of the total. The 3 most common objects were: hats (38 pieces), glass bottles (22 pieces), and aluminum cans (22 pieces).
It is important to remember the damage that waste (mainly plastic) can cause to ecosystems. Minimizing our waste production and making sure it does not reach the ocean are two simple actions that can have a huge impact on the health of reefs and the communities around them.
